If you’ve spoken with us on the phone, then there is a good chance you’ve already had the pleasure of meeting our neighbor, the “L.” The rumble of the elevated train system in Chicago has become woven into the fabric of the city, as inseparable as the Empire State Building is from New York. It began running in 1892, just in time for the World’s Fair in 1893, which I’m a tad obsessed with. Some of the graphics used to promote the L throughout its history can be seen below, and you can see much more here. It’s fun to see how design and language was used to promote both the benefits and the romance of train travel.
